This re-imagined Kota mask draws from a historic example once owned by William Rubin, honoring its original spiritual authority while translating it into a contemporary visual language. Traditionally created to guard ancestral relics, the Kota mask is known for its commanding symmetry and watchful presence. In this work, the form is elevated through hand-applied Swarovski crystals, each placed individually to introduce light, precision, and reverence to the surface. The result is a piece that holds a direct gaze with the viewer, bridging ritual object and modern icon, and inviting reflection on legacy, value, and the enduring power of African form.
